USMLE Step 2CS Course Overview

Only available in the US, our USMLE Step 2CS preparation provides you with 5 days of realistic exam preparation in a mock USMLE Step 2CS Center. You'll have instruction on US based communication, note taking and what's expected in the exam.

You will also receive practice with 10 Standardized Patients, giving you a realistic idea of what you will face on the USMLE Step 2CS exam.

As you can only take the USMLE Step 2CS exam in the US. Many International Graduates will book their Step 2CS course in the week prior to their test and travel to take both.

USMLE Step 2CS Overview

The USMLE Step 2CS (Clinical Skills) is required for all International Graduates who wish to work or train as a Doctor in the US. All International Graduates must gain ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates) Certification and to get this they must pass the USMLE Step 1, 2CK and 2CS.

The Step 2CS is a live exam, testing a Doctors patient interaction, communication and note writing skills. There is no English Language competency exam requirement for International Graduates, however, they must pass the USMLE Step 2CS.

International Graduates tend to struggle with the USMLE Step 2CS as it is US Specific patient communication, note writing and diagnosis. Kaplan's preparation provides you with practice in the exam format and guides your study based on exam expectations.

USMLE Step 2CS Format

Total Test Time: 8 hours

Total Break Time: 2 breaks (30 minutes; 15 minutes)

Number of Patient Encounters: 11 or 12 (11 are scored)

Total Length of Each Patient Encounter: 15 minutes

Time Allotted for Writing Each Patient Note: 10 minutes

USMLE Step 2CS Test Scoring

The USMLE Step 2CS is a Pass or Fail exam. You will not receive a score as with the USMLE Step 1 or Step 2CK. To gain a Pass, you will need to pass all 12 Patient Interactions.

85% off your pass will be given by the Standardized Patient who has no Medical background and is an Actor.

1 out of 6 International Medical Graduates fail the USMLE Step 2CS Exam.

Registering for the USMLE Step 2CS Exam

To register for the USMLE Step 2CS exam, you must first register with the ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates) to get an Identification Number. Register with the ECFMG online at www.ecfmg.org.

Once you have this number you can then book a 12 month Eligibility Period in which you plan to take your USMLE Step 2CS Exam. Once you have picked this you cannot change it, and you must take your USMLE Step 2CS Exam in this time.
