Live Online FAQs

Do I need to download software to join the virtual classroom?
No, all you need is an internet browser with an up-to-date version of Flash. Flash is already installed on 97% of internet browsers.

What will I see on my screen when I am in the virtual classroom?
You will see a variety of items which change throughout the lesson, including presentation slides, sample GRE questions, a question-and-answer box, chat areas, online polls, a webcam shot of your teacher, and an onscreen whiteboard which the instructor will write on just like in a “real” classroom. We use Adobe Acrobat Connect.

Will I have to dial into a conference call to hear the audio?
No—the system uses VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) technology which integrates audio into the classroom environment, allowing you to communicate without using a telephone line. It is just like using Skype. This service is completely free..

Do I need a broadband connection?
It is recommended that you use a high-speed internet connection to avoid any delays when in the virtual classroom. If you have a dial-up internet service, you may prefer to take Kaplan’s GRE On Demand Course, which contains self-paced lessons, and so does not require you to follow live online sessions.

My computer doesn't have speakers or a microphone, so how will I listen and talk in class?
You will require a headset to listen to the lessons. If you have a headset with a microphone then you can communicate using it. If you don't want to talk over the microphone, you can also type your questions in the chat box.

Do I get books and materials with GRE Anywhere?
Yes, you will get a full study kit which is identical to those used by GRE Classroom Course students. See the Course Materials box above for a full list. We will ship this to you ahead of the start of the course.

What should I have ready for my first course session?
You should take your Diagnostic Test online before Session 1 of your course, so plan to set aside about 3 hours to in order to complete that test. The Diagnostic Test is accessible online . For every class, please have ready your headset or speakers, GRE Course Book, and any materials you want for taking notes.

What do I do if I cannot make a class?
All Kaplan classes are available as pre-recorded Lessons-on-Demand™ from within the online syllabus.

Who can answer my academic questions about the course in which I am enrolled?

Test Overview

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test is designed to provide US graduate schools with a common measure for comparing their applicants’ qualifications. The exam does not test specific subject knowledge and instead measures quantitative, verbal and analytical writing skills. You will be required to take the GRE if you wish to go on to graduate (post-graduate) study in the US.

Test Format

Verbal Section (Two Sections)

Time: 30 minutes
Format: 20 questions
Topics Tested: Reading, Analytical Reasoning, Vocabulary
Question Types: Verbal: Text Completion, Sentence Equivalence, Reading Comprehension (with increased focus on short passages)

Quantitative Section

Time: 35 minutes
Format: 20 questions
Topics Tested: Basic Math, Mathematical Concepts, Quantitative Reasoning
Question Types: Problem Solving, Quantitative Comparisons, Data Interpretation

Writing Assessment

Time: 60 minutes
Format: Two 30 minute essays
Topics Tested: Analysis of an Argument, Analysis of an Issue

Scores

Each of the three sections on the GRE is scored separately. You will be given a "scaled score" within a range of 130-170 for both the quantitative and verbal sections in one point increments. You will also receive a score on a scale of 0 to 6 for the writing section.

A percentile rank will be given in addition to scaled scores. Your performance will be calculated relative to those of a large sample population of other GRE takers, giving you a percentile rank. This means that if you scored higher than 60% of GRE test takers you scored in the 60th percentile.

Registration

As the GRE is a computerized test it is available throughout the year.

You register for the GRE with the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The most convenient way to find a testing center and register is online at www.gre.org.

There will be a discount 50% fee reduction in August & September.

Currently the cost to take the exam in the US $160. To take the exam outside the US the cost is $170. ETS takes most major credit cards.
