Test Overview

The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a standardized test used by business school admissions officers to measure academic ability. In fact, data has shown that GMAT scores are consistently good, though imperfect, predictors of academic success in the first year of business school.

The exam measures general verbal, mathematical, and analytical writing skills. It does not test business competence nor specific subject knowledge.

The test features both verbal and math multiple-choice sections, along with two 30-minute essay topics. The GMAT is given as a Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) in most parts of the world.

A high score on the GMAT will increase the likelihood of getting into the business school program of your choice. More than 250,000 people (roughly 90,000 international test takers and 150,000 U.S. test takers) take the GMAT each year, so it is important for you to do well and stand out from the other candidates.

Test Format

Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA)

Time: 60 minutes
Format: Two 30-minute essays
Topics Tested: Analysis of an Argument and Analysis of an Issue

Quantitative Section

Time: 75 minutes
Format: Maximum of 37 multiple choice questions
Topics Tested: Algebra, Arithmetic, Geometry
Question Types: Problem Solving, Data Sufficiency

Verbal Section

Time: 75 minutes
Format: Maximum of 41 multiple choice questions
Topics Tested: Reading, Grammar, Analytical Reasoning
Question Types: Reading Comprehension, Sentence Correction, Critical Reasoning

Test Scores

You will receive four scores on the GMAT.

  • An overall score, ranging from 200 to 800
  • A math subscore, ranging from 0 to 60
  • A verbal subscore, ranging from 0 to 60
  • A score for the Analytical Writing Assessment, ranging from 0 to 6
Percentile Rank

Each of the scores is accompanied by a percentile rank, which highlights the proportion of test takers who scored lower than you on the test. For example, if you received a percentile rank of 56, you did better than 56 percent of test takers.

The Essay Scores

Each essay is given a separate grade on a 0-6 scale by two different graders--a human and a computer called the "e-rater". These grades are assigned holistically, taking into account all aspects of content, writing style, and grammar.

Register for the Test

Registering for the GMAT must be done online. The cost to take the exam, or "appointment fee", is currently US $250, plus any applicable taxes for the country in which you sit the test.

Register online at www.mba.com. The Graduate Management Admissions Council (GMAC) takes most major credit cards.

To retake the exam, simply follow the same procedures. However, please note that you are only allowed to take the GMAT once every 31 days, and only 5 times per year.
